The Bitcoin ETF PIE Fund is taxed in accordance with the Fair Dividend Rate (FDR) methodology. In contrast, where NZ tax payers invest directly in bitcoin they typically pay tax on their total return including realised capital gains.

As a PIE fund, tax is capped at a maximum of 28% on a 5% "deemed dividend" income under Fair Dividend Rate (FDR) methodology. This equates to a maximum of 1.4% per annum of tax (being 5% multiplied by 28%) on the Bitcoin ETF PIE Fund. Investors on lower PIR tax rates will pay less tax based on their lower rate.
